Dental Hygienist

Hi, I’m Azita Aflatouni, a Registered Dental Hygienist at Southland Dental. I graduated in 1992 with an associate degree in Dental Hygiene and am certified in both Alberta and Ontario. I also hold certifications in orthodontics, dental hygiene, and HARP.

My daily duties include preparing operatories for patients, taking various x-rays, performing cancer screenings using the VELscope, assessing the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and reviewing medical histories for returning patients. For new patients, I consult with our Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) when there are any concerning conditions. I also handle charting existing restorations, taking intraoral photos, dental cleanings and root planing, administering fluoride treatments, providing oral hygiene instructions (OHI), educating and motivating patients about their oral health needs, and rebooking appointments.

I’ve previously tutored English at Hawaii Pacific University and remain active in the community through volunteer work. I serve as an interpreter for Saamis Immigration and volunteer with Unisphere, a nonprofit organization in Medicine Hat.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, climbing, playing volleyball and table tennis. I’m an avid reader—especially of poetry—and I have a deep interest in philosophy, Persian literature, psychology, and sociology.

I’m married and a proud mother to two wonderful daughters: one is in law, and the other in nursing. I immigrated to Canada 32 years ago and have lived in Toronto, New York, and Hawaii before settling in Medicine Hat in 2006. It’s been home ever since—and we love it!

My approach to care is holistic. I see each patient as a whole person, and this value helps me connect with them, understand their needs, earn their trust, and achieve positive outcomes—almost always.

Every great smile starts with a great team
